Review: Riptide GP: Renegade – Physics Has Never Been So Much Fun

Everything you would expect in 2017 from an arcade racer is here: quick races, a campaign mode, elimination mode, freestyle stunt mode, vehicle customisation, online multiplayer. All the trimmings. It even packs in a blast from the past – local multiplayer via split-screen! It’s getting harder and harder to find in a racer nowadays, but here it is.

Prize money from races is spent on improving your craft and widening your skill set with new stunts and perks. The more complex stunts you unlock and pull off, the quicker you’ll fill that all-important boost bar that helps you see that finish line before anyone else.

Thankfully, MFi controller implementation and UI has been completely thought through with a view to providing a full console experience. Great use of various dual-stick combos will see you pulling off some crazy stunts, and the rag-doll physics are an entertaining punishment for those who bite off more than they can chew.

Riptide GP: Renegade finds a nice balance between over the top arcade fun, and realistic water physics. Racing on water with this style of watercraft is a completely different experience than a bitumen road racer. The unpredictability of waves big and small add a great element of chance. Players need to almost predict corners slightly, and oversteering will cause your craft to dig in and come to a nearly dead stop very quickly. This sort of racing is a whole new skill to learn, and in Riptide you’ll have a lot of fun learning it.

Get wet ATV gamers, you won’t regret it.

In A Nutshell:

Riptide GP: Renegade from Vector Unit balances perfectly modelled water physics with over the top arcade racing. The result is an easily recommended, complete console experience for your Apple TV.
