While Dig Dug first saw action in the arcades of the early ’80s, I first experienced it on the Atari 2600. It’s amazing how some of these fundamental gameplay ideas, even decades later, are still being iterated on by developers in 2018. Good ideas never die.
The core mechanic is built around digging ever deeper into the ground, and setting off chain reactions of items as you go by removing their support after you’ve dug beneath them. It’s a fun idea that involves fast arcade movement, while also presenting a puzzle element given that you need to be aware of the immediate consequences of where you dig.
Watching Diggerman’s trailer below, it looks like Digital Melody Games has brought all sorts of explosives and tricks to the table to amp up the action, while even finding room to shoehorn a story into the mix. Players will be questing to save the Huge Angry Mole’s beloved, who in a shocking twist has been kidnapped.
As with Runventure, Diggerman will be free-to-play and is expected to release May 17th. It will be a universal download across iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV, and you can pre-order it now from the App Store on any of those devices.
