iPhone and iPad gamers have already been enjoying Smash Club for a week, and now it’s Apple TV’s turn. If you have been playing over the last week on mobile, then you’ll be pleased to know that thanks to iCloud saving your progress will be portable between iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. Much the same as with Toon Shooters 2 – and a stack of other ATV games – you can live out your Nintendo Switch fantasies and take your games with you from your big screen to your pocket.
I jumped into Smash Club for all of about 15 minutes to get a quick taste before posting something, but first impressions are good, and I look forward to playing a whole lot more.
As the iTunes description notes, there are 50 playable characters, and as usual Mooff Games have included some fantastic geek-culture references. Want to play as Ben Kenobi? Well you can, although the character is named Old Ben. Characters are also depicted in a blocky Lego aesthetic which adds to the fun.
Not only are there tons of characters to unlock, but there are customisable costumes as well, which is a great addition.
In true Double Dragon style, there’s a bunch of weapons to find, such as swords, pipes and so on, and barrels and various items can be picked up and thrown at enemies.
In perhaps the best news, players with more than one controller can play local co-op up to 4 players, or the Siri Remote can be used as another controller as well. Local couch co-op is without a doubt the dream scenario for these sorts of side-scrolling brawlers, and it’s great to see a developer embracing the somewhat dying mode. There’s online multiplayer to acknowledge the 21st century too.
Okay, so that’s the basics. To write in any more detail about a game, the game needs to be played, right? So that’s what I’m going to do: play a whole bunch of Smash Club: Streets of Shmeenis so I can bring you some much more informed impressions. It’s free to download with a premium upgrade which gives you instant access to a bunch of the characters rather than having to unlock them, a stack of coins to get you started and some more goodies. Give it a go and let ATVG know what you think by hitting the Facebook link at the top of the page.
Enjoy!
