Morphite will release September 7th for Apple TV, iOS, PS4, Xbox One, Steam, and Nintendo Switch. That’s a mouthful.
Another influence, whether intentional or not, also seems to jump out when you dig into the storyline: “The player takes on the role of Myrah Kale, a young woman residing on a space station and workshop under the care of her surrogate father, Mr. Mason,” says the synopsis on the game’s official site. Have you picked it yet? “What starts as a simple exploratory mission to gather supplies to support their shop rapidly turns into a journey revealing Myrah’s unknown past and her relationship to a rare, coveted, and nearly extinct material called Morphite.” This description is reminiscent of the setup for Beyond Good and Evil, yet another classic to add to the list of Morphite’s inspirations.
And the list continues.
“Your goal is to explore the galaxy, research plants and animals, battle hostile entities, and unravel a mystery surrounding a rare material called Morphite,” the synopsis also tells us, wearing its No Man’s Sky on its sleeve.
Boss battles, upgrades, space exploration, trading, star maps, a deep storyline – Morphite is aiming to tick a lot of boxes.
Apple TV has seen some quality additions to its catalogue over the last 6 months, with Forma.8, Kingdom: New Lands, Space Marshals 2, and Quantum Revenge to name just a few. Morphite looks extremely promising, and if it can take even just a little of the magic from each of its inspirations, and bring something of its own to the table, then we might be in for a real treat. Even just the combination of an unusual set of influences alone could be enough to help it feel fresh.
