Sci-Fi FPS VAST Launches As Apple TV’s First Ever Platform Exclusive

Well, as we’ve already partly given away in the headline and the screenshot above, VAST – Cosmic Treasure Hunters is an “anime-flavored sci-fi action adventure first person shooter,” to quote straight from the App Store description.

Hardware-wise, studio Astrogun recommends an Apple TV 4K to get the best out of VAST, and it requires an MFi controller to play.

The trailer below and the App Store description don’t give too much away about the story, but it does sound like a nice familiar set up for a big, sprawling space opera: A team of space adventurers find themselves at the “mythical Frozen Star,” with baddies hot on their heels and a ship in need of repairs.

VAST’s future roadmap promises an episodic release via free updates after the initial purchase, with Episode 1 – The Star On No Map (from The Frozen Star campaign) – available now.

Since starting ATVG in December 2016, I’ve always thought it’s surely a matter of time until a studio decides to take a risk on the platform and release an exclusive. Apple TV gaming desperately needs some love from developers willing to take that risk, and whoever jumps in now gets to be a big fish in a small pond. So whatever happens with VAST, I take my hat off to Xander Davis and Astrogun for having a crack and making history. Only one can be first.
