No New Apple Arcade Games – But Loads Of Free Content Updates

Screen Shot 2019-10-19 at 12.19.40 pm

My Saturday morning routine is now set.

Out of bed and over to the coffee machine to put on a brew. The pot takes about fifteen minutes to do its thing, filling the apartment with an aroma soon to be tasted. And drunk. Taken in, imbibed, absorbed. Nay, worshipped.

While the machine is doing its thing, grab the iPad and check for new Apple Arcade games. A pleasant little anticipatory buzz as the Arcade section of the App Store loads, to reveal . . . this morning . . . nothing.

That’s okay. The upside is it makes next Saturday a little more exciting, knowing the odds are even better. The other upside this weekend was discovering a bunch of content updates to existing Arcade titles, one of the most notable of which was the conclusion to Shantae’s adventure.

Actually, it felt like Part 2 of Shantae and the Seven Sirens was released in lieu of new Arcade titles this weekend, which seems like a fair compromise.

The last few weeks have seen a slew of notable content updates to Apple Arcade titles, and as stated in today’s previous post, your Apple Arcade subscription is like a season pass to all the games on the service, granting players instant access to future content at no extra cost. Love it.

Hit the continue button below for a look at a handful of Arcade titles that received some big, fat content updates in the last 24 hours or so.

Shantae And The Seven Sirens – The End Is Now

Okay, maybe that headline was a little melodramatic, but it’s hard not to be at the moment.

When studio Wayforward – now in its 30th year of making games – released the long-awaited fifth title in the Shantae series as an Apple Arcade launch title in September 2019, it didn’t actually give players the whole game. Only Part 1 was released,  with Part 2 set to come at an unannounced later date.

Well that unannounced later date has arrived – Part 2 hit your Apple Arcade collection as a free update to Shantae and the Seven Sirens today, along with a whole raft of improvements.

PC and console gamers were also treated to an announcement today by Wayforward, with the studio revealing the release date for those platforms.

10 Apple Arcade Games That Have Already Had Free Content Updates

No ads, no in-app-purchases (IAPs).

These were only two of the bullet points promised back in March 2019 when Apple unveiled Apple Arcade, its disruptive gaming subscription service. But those two bullet points add up to a whole lot of value for Apple Arcade gamers.

No IAPs also means no paid downloadable content, meaning that any content updates that come to Apple Arcade games, will be free.

Have you ever opened up the App Store to check for updates and noticed one of your go-to games has had a free content update? Now you can love that game you already love even more. And as we know, love is all folks.

An excellent example is the recent 8.0.0 update that came to Real Racing 3, bringing Formula 1 racing to this six and a half year old game, and getting me playing again.

With 102 games currently available, ATVG expects to see a lot of Apple Arcade games receiving free content updates over the next 12 months, but even now, with the service only having launched in September, many games have already received additional goodness to enjoy. And there is more on the way.

In this recent piece, ATVG had a look at studio Cornfox’s 2020 roadmap for excellent JRPG Oceanhorn 2, noting that there’s a big content update brewing. I guess I’ll have to get in and finish the game before then. Work to do.

Over the page you’ll read about 10 Apple Arcade games that have already had content additions in the last couple of months. Some are small, such as additional achievements, and some are big, adding whole new levels and worlds.

Let’s dig in.

Formula 1 And Real Racing 3 – Together At Last

IMG_0764

February 2013: Obama is President, the PS4 has not yet been released, the iPhone 5 and 4th generation iPad were cutting edge, and it will be another three and a half years until an Apple TV with gaming capability hits shelves, sparking the idea for this website.

Six and a half years feels like an eternity in the tech-based industry of gaming, but that’s how long I’ve been playing and writing about Real Racing 3. In that length of time, many franchises would’ve released half a dozen sequels, but the fact that Real Racing has been sitting on number 3 since 2013 is an indication that Firemonkeys is doing alright with its racer.

Earlier this week, Firemonkeys unleashed the latest in RR3’s long, long line of free content updates – version 8.0.0. What’s so significant about this update that warrants it being a freshly numbered version?

Two words. Well, one word, and one number.

Forumla 1.

Cornfox Reveals 2020 Roadmap For Oceanhorn 2 – Big Content Update

Oceanhorn-2-Key-Art-1.jpg

Just prior to the launch of Oceanhorn 2 in September, ATVG posted this story revealing the final trailer before the studio hit the big go button. That story is the best way to catch up on this site’s coverage of the sequel, from its initial announcement right through to launch, as I’ve packed all the necessary links into it.

Now that launch has come and gone, and some of you may have even finished it by now (with 101 Apple Arcade games to play, I’ve yet to take much of a bite out of it), it’s time to look to the future.

Today Cornfox did just that, revealing plans for some big updates in 2020.

Towaga: Among Shadows – Content Update Incoming

EFSy_vvXkAExtHz.jpeg

Hot on the heels of Radian Games announcing a huge incoming update for its excellent Apple Arcade racer Speed Demons, which you can read all about right here, Sunnyside Games also announced today that there is more on the way for Towaga: Among Shadows.

With currently 80 games to choose from on Apple Arcade, and more on the way (you can check out another 24 upcoming games right here), it will take ATVG some time to experience them all.

Tonight I’ve jumped in and had a look at Towaga: Among Shadows for the first time, and was once again made aware of the high bar of quality that Apple Arcade games are setting on our Apple TVs (and of course iPads, iPhones, and now Macs).

If, unlike me, you’re deep into the weeds of Towaga’s content, and are hoping for more, today’s announcement will definitely put a smile on your dial.
