You might be unboxing your shiny new fifth generation Apple TV this weekend – the Apple TV 4K. Happy days. You might have even heard or read that there are some excellent console gaming experiences to be had on the platform with a controller, so you went the extra mile and picked one up to go with your purchase.

You’ve unboxed, plugged in, set up, and paired your controller. Now what? Where are these games?

Unfortunately Apple isn’t doing a great job of curating the gaming section on Apple TV’s App Store, and unless you know the specific games you’re searching for, it can be hard ploughing through the countless iOS ports of one touch auto-runners and shovel ware. Where are the big, traditional video games, the ones you bought your controller to play – the platformers, shooters, and adventures?

We’ve put together a list to get you started. The first list of games over on page 2 are all available on PS4, Xbox One, or both. It’s not a definitive list, but it’s an excellent place to start.

There are also a lot of iOS ports that have been freed from the confines of mobile screens and touch controls, and actually feel much more at home on the digital-only console of Apple TV with a controller in hand. We’ve included a selection of these over on page 2 as well. You can also check out this list of the best titles from the platform’s first year of life, some of which have made it onto today’s selection.

We’re optimistic here at ATVG that with the power under the hood of the Apple TV 4K, and the announcement of the upcoming Sky, gaming on this fledging platform might have a bright future.

Have fun!

Morphite Gameplay Trailers Showcase Alien Wildlife, Resources and Space Exploration

bannerWeb

Update: Morphite is out now on Apple TV, PS4, Xbox One, PC, and iOS. The Nintendo Switch version is coming in Q4 2017. Enjoy!

Original Story: Sometimes showing is better than telling, and this series of new gameplay trailers for upcoming Morphite do exactly that. And when I say upcoming, I mean in two days time.

We’ve been following this collaboration between Blowfish Studios, We’re Five Games, and Crescent Moon Games for a while now, ever since CMG’s Josh Presseisen showed off Morphite’s gameplay on an iPhone to Toucharcade. While Morphite looks like a nice addition to your pocket gaming options, its scope looks like something that big flat screens might be well suited for. On September 21st it’ll be your choice, as it hits Apple TV, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Steam, and iOS all at once.

Apple TV 4K – Sky is Coming. Can it Sell Apple TV Gaming?

Screen Shot 2017-09-16 at 11.53.17 am

Two significant things happened last week on the stage of the Steve Jobs Theatre that will play a large part in determining the future of Apple TV gaming.

First was the announcement of the fifth generation Apple TV – called simply Apple TV 4K.

Prior to this year’s WWDC, we reached out to a handful of developers to find out their wish list regarding gaming on the then unannounced device, and with Apple TV 4K’s unveiling, some of them had their wishes granted. In part.

The second of those significant things was the announcement of what would come next from thatgamecompany, the studio behind one of gaming’s high water marks of recent years – Journey.

The unveiling of Sky in conjunction with Apple TV 4K positioned the game as a hopeful system seller for Apple, or at the very least, a seller of the gaming aspect of Apple TV 4K, given that gaming is not its primary function.

Can Sky help Apple TV towards a future in which the device is accepted as a viable option for big screen gaming?

Minecraft and Controller Bundle Now Available for Apple TV. Woah.

Screen Shot 2017-09-05 at 5.42.15 pm

Finally! Interesting news in a report from iOS site Toucharcade today – the online US Apple Store has made available a bundle which will net you the Steel Series Nimbus controller, together with a download code for Minecraft: Apple TV Edition. (It’s not appearing on the Australian site, so this bundle may be US only).

This is definitely a healthy step towards visibility for Apple TV as a viable gaming option, especially when coupled with such a household name as Minecraft.

I’ve written a full review of the Steel Series Nimbus a while back for Grab It Magazine, and it’s an excellent controller. Folks, in short, this bundle is a good deal.

Apple Streaming September 12 Event Via Apple TV

Screen Shot 2017-09-01 at 8.07.11 pm

It’s official. What the rest of the world are calling the iPhone 8 event, ATVG is calling the Apple TV event.

Apple today announced its upcoming Special Event, noting via its offical site that the keynote will be streamed live and viewable on 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation Apple TVs. By this stage it seems reasonably safe to assume that by the end of the event, the previous generations of hardware will feel a little older, being joined by a 5th generation Apple TV.

The 4K rumours are strong, which is all well and good for media consumption, but what we really care about on this particular site is gaming. If Apple does announce the next generation Apple TV on September 12, bringing 4K muscle to the ring, will it also lean into promoting the gaming potential that this extra grunt under the hood would make possible?

Prior to WWDC this year, we reached out to some developers and asked what they would like to see in a 5th generation Apple TV, netting some interesting results.

Join us on September 12 to see whether rumours crystallise into a playable future, or evaporate into what might’ve been.

Zombie Survival FPS Radiation City Out Now on Apple TV

16

My memory tells me that ninjas were at the top of the food chain in the ‘80s, as far as B-grade action movies and games go. The ‘90s and ‘00s saw various combinations and permutations of aliens, pirates, vampires and werewolves taking turns at being the flavour of the day, sometimes even fighting each other. More recently, for the last half a dozen years or so, zombies have ruled the entertainment roost. Despite having no personality, no sex appeal, and no table manners whatsoever, these disgusting, decomposing freaks just simply cannot be killed.

Let’s face it though, zombies make for great cannon fodder in video games, and combining the walking dead with the open world survival genre, results in a match made in post-apocalyptic heaven (or as some might say, hell). Open world survival games are in short supply on the Apple TV platform, with Minecraft possibly being the only example. Until now.

The release this week of Radiation City from Atypical Games makes two.

TAITO’s RAYCRISIS Hit Apple TV Today

3d0cc67d-e38e-4d27-8700-b3f25b05ff99_p_04_ja

Jumping in with a very quick post here, and no, I’m not shouting at you with caps lock in the headline, it just wouldn’t feel right typing “Taito.” The company that brought Space Invaders to the world also seems to want its Ray-trilogy to be known for its capitals, except for the first one – RayForce, which is weirdly inconsistent.

The news came from TAITO today via this Tweet:

“TAITO CorporationRAYCRISIS, the final installment in TAITO’s classic RAY series of arcade shooting games, locks on to iPhone & Android! https://www.taito.com/mob/news/2786 via @TAITO”

Of course the Tweet forgot to mention Apple TV compatibility, but you can only do so much with 140 characters.

From The ATVG Bunker: 4K Rumours and What We’re Playing

og

Without actually going back and fact checking, I’d say 10 days is the longest ATVG has gone without any posts since spawning back in December 2016. After breaking radio silence earlier today with our post on the upcoming Swim Out, we thought what better way to get back up to speed than with a From The ATVG Bunker post?

These posts – and you can read the first one here – are an umbrella under which to shelter ATVG’s editorial ramblings that may not be laser-focused on one specific topic. It’s a great way to play catchup, provide some sort of narrative through line for regular readers, and a self-indulgent opportunity to colour outside the lines a little.

To find out what’s currently being played in the ATVG Bunker, musings on the lack of any mention of Apple TV during the recent quarterly report, and for some fifth generation Apple TV rumours, hit the page 2 button below.

WWDC 2017 Keynote and Apple TV Gaming: Less is More?

og

Cutting to the chase, Apple CEO Tim Cook chose to dispense with the customary sales figures and success stories of the last 12 months, and at seven minutes and fifteen seconds into WWDC 2017’s keynote speech, simply announced, “Apple is doing great.”

Over the next ninety-six seconds, Cook announced that Amazon Prime Video will be coming to Apple TV later this year, finishing up with, “You’ll be hearing a lot more about tvOS later this year.” And that was that for Apple TV news in a keynote that went on to span two hours and nineteen minutes.

I’ll admit, for someone who had been waiting eagerly for some sort of glimpse into the future of gaming on Apple’s digital-only console, at first I was a little shocked. But in hindsight, I’m actually even more intrigued, and more optimistic about the future of Apple TV gaming than before.

WWDC 2017 & Apple TV Gaming: What Do Developers Want to See?

wwdc17-og

There are those of us who play games on our fourth-generation Apple TVs. For some, it may be their only gaming platform, and for others – such as this writer – it may be one of many. The Internet is full of debate among gamers about what would make a gaming platform better, but at ATVG we thought why not go one better? Why not ask developers?

So we did.

The question we posed was this:

As a game developer, what would you be hoping to hear announced in the WWDC 2017 Keynote, regarding the future of Apple TV gaming?

The responses we received are worth diving into, and had an interesting common theme running through them. Join us on page 2 for more.
