RPGolf – Does What It Says On The Box

392x696bb

Okay so there’s no actual box per se, but you know what I mean.

All those fans of old-school, top-down, 8-bit RPGs, who have spent countless years wondering what those games would be like if the magical abilities were replaced with golf-related abilities, can finally get some relief. That particular bridge between imagination and reality is now structurally sound, and can be crossed.

In other words, this week saw RPGolf from developer Articnet release on Apple TV.

“Pixelbite’s Space Marshals 2 is a twin-stick shooter that wears both its hats – stealth, and run and gun – exceedingly well. Console-quality fun,” is how we summed our review, so there’s no hiding our love for this excellent shooter.

We posted not long ago about upcoming DLC for Space Marshals 2, and we’re very happy to report that overnight, “upcoming” became “available now.”

DJixOSfX0AADjH_

Finally! Some actual, concrete details.

Since its announcement two months ago, talk of Sky has consisted of conceptual ramblings involving “gratefulness, appreciation, and giving,” without any real hard details about what players will actually be doing in-game. But today, via a first over on IGN, thatgamecompany’s Jenova Chen narrated viewers through a little over six minutes of gameplay, giving the world a look at what looks to be a beautiful, cooperative gaming experience, involving…gratefulness, appreciation, and giving.

Thatgamecompany’s Sky Could Release As Early As December

Thatgamecompany’s CEO Jenonva Chen is talking all things Sky on iOS 11’s Today section in the revamped App Store this morning.

Since Chen announced the follow up to Journey live on stage at this year’s iPhone event two months ago, things have been quiet. Being focused on Apple TV gaming, ATVG is understandably excited by the fact that Sky will be playable on big screens first via Apple TV. For some deeper editorial pondering on whether Sky might be able to sell the idea of Apple TV as a viable option for big screen gaming, have a read right here.

Back to the present though, the big news from today’s interview between Chen and Apple, is that we may be playing Sky before Christmas.

Review: Morphite – On Its Own Two Feet

bannerWeb

In one of our earlier preview pieces on Morphite, we listed off a few of the classics that inspired collaborators Crescent Moon Games and Blow Fish Studios, such as Metroid Prime and Zelda. Crescent Moon Games’ official site for Morphite reels off even more beloved franchises – Ratchet and Clank, and Turok.

Inspirations and influences are inevitable, but committing them to words on screens for an upcoming game is bold, especially with such legendary names being thrown about. The danger is two-fold – setting expectations beyond the achievable, and releasing a product that’s merely a sum of its inspirations, with nothing to distinguish it as its own game.

How about Morphite then? Does it manage to climb off the shoulders of the giants that inspired it, and stand on its own?

Abi: A Robot’s Tale – Point And Click With Feeling

520x293bb

The trailer for Abi: A Robot’s Tale left ATVG with heartstrings well and truly pulled.

What is it about a few gentle touches on ivory connected to strings, behind heartbreakingly cute robot buddies searching for meaning in a desolate, lonely world that leaves us thinking big things and asking the unanswerable on a Saturday morning?

Well I guess I’ve answered my own question.

Sky Gamblers: Infinite Jets – That’s A Lot Of Jets

8

Atypical Games is throwing a lot of love at the Apple TV’s App Store, with this week’s release of Sky Gamblers: Infinite Jets being the studio’s fifth title for the platform. Joining Sky Gamblers Races, Radiation City, Infinite Tanks, and Battle Supremacy: Evolution, Infinite Jets sits firmly within the studio’s oeuvre of console-quality games.

In other words, it sure looks pretty.

Update to Kingdom: New Lands will add 6th Island

d40e3abe-a45f-4697-bdaa-35885f7572c7

Update: The free update adding sixth island – Skull Island – just released today. Enter at your own risk though, as Raw Fury warns that Skull Island is brutally difficult. (ATVG is still trying to leave the first island!)

Original Story: Kingdom: New Lands just turned two years old, with publisher Raw Fury celebrating by sending out an email yesterday detailing a pretty big update currently being worked on, and after reaching out we received confirmation that the update is also coming to Apple TV.

Excellent.

Raw Fury describes Kingdom as “a small game about royalty stuck to horses and throwing coins at people.” While it’s hard to think of a better way to sum up this beautiful game in fewer words, that elevator pitch doesn’t give any indication of the level of depth that Kingdom hides within its simple gameplay mechanics.

Action RPG Runic Rampage – Plugging a Hole in Apple TV’s Catalogue

header-1

Update: Studio Electrocosmos have announced a release date for Runic Rampage – November 2nd. Not long!

Original Story: Action RPGs are thin on the ground in the Apple TV gaming catalogue.

Dungeon Hunter 5 from Gameloft brings bite-size Diablo-like missions which are fun – and the game has nice production values – but you can’t help but want those missions to extend into a larger environment, giving you room to explore and swing those weapons.

Dungeon Time from Mooff Games is positioned as more of a twin-stick shooter, although it does boast RPG flavours brought to the table courtesy of upgradeable abilities and characters.

Where the Apple TV gaming catalogue is lacking is fully-featured dungeon crawlers with loot, spells, weapons, armour, and raging dwarves.

Can German studio Electrocosmos help plug the hole with its upcoming Runic Rampage?

Review: Yuri – Blue Is The Warmest Colour

HeaderPressKit

Update (2 June 2019): The final levels promised at the end of Fingerlab’s excellent little 2D platormer have arrived. The conclusion of Yuri’s story can now be enjoyed courtesy of a free update this week which added 16 new levels. Happy days.

“Thanks for your patience,” Fingerlab writes in its patch notes. “It took awhile, but we needed the time to create a completely new environment: Yuri’s mysterious house, full of surprises and challenges.”

Fingerlab has also “reworked some levels and remastered the soundtrack” in order to give players an “even more immersive experience.”

Just in time for the weekend too.

Original Story: French studio Fingerlab have been bringing the touchscreens of our iPhones and iPads to life in innovative ways for years. Games such as Multiponk, Albert (which is also available on Apple TV), and Atom Run, mix creativity with interaction, resulting in a diverse range of experiences that share a bond of warmth and joy.

It’s not surprising that Fingerlab make tools for creatives as well as games: Apps for making music such DM1, DFX, and Rockmate; tools for filmography such as iMotion; and even Musyc – an app that uniquely blends visual and aural exploration.

Yuri is yet another example of the studio’s penchant for fusing art and gameplay, conjuring a 2D action platformer that ranges from fast and furious, to whimsical dreamscape.
