Abi: A Robot’s Tale – Point And Click With Feeling

The trailer for Abi: A Robot’s Tale left ATVG with heartstrings well and truly pulled.

What is it about a few gentle touches on ivory connected to strings, behind heartbreakingly cute robot buddies searching for meaning in a desolate, lonely world that leaves us thinking big things and asking the unanswerable on a Saturday morning?

Well I guess I’ve answered my own question.

Atypical Games is throwing a lot of love at the Apple TV’s App Store, with this week’s release of Sky Gamblers: Infinite Jets being the studio’s fifth title for the platform. Joining Sky Gamblers Races, Radiation City, Infinite Tanks, and Battle Supremacy: Evolution, Infinite Jets sits firmly within the studio’s oeuvre of console-quality games.

In other words, it sure looks pretty.

5 More Upcoming Apple TV Games We’re Excited About

apple-tv-hero-select-201709

Okay, it’s time to get our ducks in a row again. It’s been a while.

Six months ago we gathered together six upcoming Apple TV games that we’ve been following and posting stories about, and put them into a handy list for easy reference. Crossing them off gradually as they get released, there are still four games on that list to come. (And a fifth…possibly…maybe…hopefully game that may never see Apple TV, but ATVG is a glass half full kind of site so fingers crossed and so on)

Six months down the track, ATVG continues to scour the internet and pester developers for news of more games to look forward to on the platform, and thought it’s about time we put together another list for your convenience. You’ll get a trailer to watch, links to the original articles, and a quick blurb for each title.

Right. Let’s do this.

PS4 and Xbox One Games You Can Play on Apple TV 4K with a Controller

You might be unboxing your shiny new fifth generation Apple TV this weekend – the Apple TV 4K. Happy days. You might have even heard or read that there are some excellent console gaming experiences to be had on the platform with a controller, so you went the extra mile and picked one up to go with your purchase.

You’ve unboxed, plugged in, set up, and paired your controller. Now what? Where are these games?

Unfortunately Apple isn’t doing a great job of curating the gaming section on Apple TV’s App Store, and unless you know the specific games you’re searching for, it can be hard ploughing through the countless iOS ports of one touch auto-runners and shovel ware. Where are the big, traditional video games, the ones you bought your controller to play – the platformers, shooters, and adventures?

We’ve put together a list to get you started. The first list of games over on page 2 are all available on PS4, Xbox One, or both. It’s not a definitive list, but it’s an excellent place to start.

There are also a lot of iOS ports that have been freed from the confines of mobile screens and touch controls, and actually feel much more at home on the digital-only console of Apple TV with a controller in hand. We’ve included a selection of these over on page 2 as well. You can also check out this list of the best titles from the platform’s first year of life, some of which have made it onto today’s selection.

We’re optimistic here at ATVG that with the power under the hood of the Apple TV 4K, and the announcement of the upcoming Sky, gaming on this fledging platform might have a bright future.

Have fun!

Apple TV 4K – Sky is Coming. Can it Sell Apple TV Gaming?

Screen Shot 2017-09-16 at 11.53.17 am

Two significant things happened last week on the stage of the Steve Jobs Theatre that will play a large part in determining the future of Apple TV gaming.

First was the announcement of the fifth generation Apple TV – called simply Apple TV 4K.

Prior to this year’s WWDC, we reached out to a handful of developers to find out their wish list regarding gaming on the then unannounced device, and with Apple TV 4K’s unveiling, some of them had their wishes granted. In part.

The second of those significant things was the announcement of what would come next from thatgamecompany, the studio behind one of gaming’s high water marks of recent years – Journey.

The unveiling of Sky in conjunction with Apple TV 4K positioned the game as a hopeful system seller for Apple, or at the very least, a seller of the gaming aspect of Apple TV 4K, given that gaming is not its primary function.

Can Sky help Apple TV towards a future in which the device is accepted as a viable option for big screen gaming?
